Freshness!!!

6:00 AM

We got the very best delivery today!  A box of fresh fruits and veggies!

We got oranges, apples, a mango, pears, carrots, broccoli, potatoes, onions, an orange bell pepper, lettuce and swiss chard.
I signed us up for Door To Door Organics!  It's a fresh food delivery that is all (mostly) local produce.  Some of it is grown in California.  They deliver either weekly or bi-weekly.  It is probably something we will do until May or so when things start growing in the garden.  Then I'll put it on hold until next fall.  I'm super excited for all of this fresh goodness in the "off season."

We already eat pretty healthy, but after reading the blog 100 Day of Real Food I'm determined to eat even better.  (That basically means that mama has to stop snacking on pre-packaged bad for you food while at work).

As I unpacked the box, I let Corrine smell each item and we talked about it.   She was very excited about the apples.  I'm not sure what to do with the swiss chard.   I'm open to suggestions.

  1. Oh what a beautiful picture of all that produce! I should look into something like this. Especially for the winter time. Spring/summer we have loads of Farmer's markets and our garden. I didn't get a chance to stop by yesterday for Yarn Along but wanted to comment that I love that idea! Was the swap on Ravelry? Would you share the link? I'd like to join! (If it's open still that is!)

  3. Oh I love that blog, it is inspirational. We don't really have any delivery system like that set up in my area, but we do have a fantastic farmer's market, I'm counting down the days to April 18th! I like swiss chard the way my mother always makes it, sauteed in olive oil with some kind of nut. Happy cooking!

  5. Yum! All of that freshness looks so good! I would saute that swiss chard in some olive oil and garlic if I were you! I'm always partial to adding hot sauce (sriracha!) to greens too. Enjoy it!

  6. i'm hoping you've already eaten that chard and i'm hoping even more that you liked it so much you're going to eat more! greens, chard in particular, are one of my most favorite things to eat. you can cook chard just like spinach. i like to cut the stems out first, then cut the leaves down a bit and sauté in olive oil (or bacon fat if i'm feeling really indulgent), add a little minced garlic at the end, possibly some butter and a squeeze of lemon. it is a great side with dinner, but also really nice at breakfast with a fried egg on top.
