Yarn Along
7:00 AMThis week I am joining Ginny at Small Things for the weekly Yarn Along. Books and Knitting. Two of my favorite things. But two things I don't get much of with a one year old.
I am reading the Hunger Games. Several of my good friends have read it and insist that I would enjoy it. I do like it, but I wonder where the author got her idea for this book. It's almost like Miss America meets the Gladiators meets Survivor. It takes place in post apocalyptic United States. There is a Capital and 12 outlying districts. Once a year one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 are chosen from each district to play in the Hunger Games. A game of survival. It is a very dark book. The movie comes out March 23rd.

I think the point of The Hunger Games (which I really liked) is that we're the people in the Capital. We're all about watching people suffer for our entertainment . . . it is a really disturbing book, but it surely made me think.
ReplyDeleteIt had me thinking as well. I'm fairly certain that I wouldn't survive if I had to hunt for my food. I'm sure I could learn if I had too, but by then it might be too late.

ReplyDeleteI'm with you. I can't quite believe that this is considered a 'young adult' book. The subject matter seems a little more 'adult' for this age group.

ReplyDeleteLove the Hunger Games! It kind of disturbs me that I liked it as much as I did, seeing I consider myself a peaceful person. I'm reading Catching Fire now. I'm sure there is a lot of symbolism in the books. My son is reading it for his English class in high school. I'm interested to get his teacher's take on it!
